Sherlock Holmes Movie Locations

Sherlock Holmes is without a doubt the most famous character in British literature, and continues to be popular in a great many movie adaptations and interpretations. The Internet Movie Database lists over 200 films and TV shows which have a character named Sherlock Holmes, and the Guinness Book Of Records states that he is the "most portrayed movie character" with over 75 actors playing the part.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Robert Downey Jr. plays a more action-orientated Holmes in this film by Guy Ritchie, which co-stars Jude Law. Despite a lot of the locations being enhanced with computer graphics, they were still unable to find everything they needed in London, and so they also filmed in Kent, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Merseyside, and Greater Manchester.

Without a Clue (1988)

Starring Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley, this is a witty role-reversal riff on the Sherlock Holmes stories, in which Sherlock Holmes doesn't exist! Doctor Watson is the real detective, and hires an actor to portray Holmes due to popular demand. As well as London, this was filmed in Middlesex, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, and Cumbria.

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

This Steven Spielberg produced movie suggests a possible first meeting between Holmes and Watson as youngsters. Nicholas Rowe plays Holmes to Alan Cox's Watson. As well as London, it was filmed in Oxfordshire, Leicestershire, Berkshire, and Kent.
